 Our Military and all of their family members made plenty of sacrifices while in service before returning to civilian life to become an integral part of our society that owns nearly 2.5M businesses in the United States, employ more than 5M people and generate more than $1T in sales and receipts annually. As a small thanks for their service we have compiled a list of organizations and initiatives resources that are dedicated to helping the whole military family.  We will continuously expand this glossary of valuable tools and organizations, so if you have recommendations for organizations, online communities, or tools that we should include, we welcome your ideas here
Always a Soldier: a program of the US Army Material Command, matches service-connected disabled veterans with civilian career opportunities throughout the Unites States. Learn more here
America’s Career ForceEnable America: their objective is to increase employment among people with disabilities in the United States. To accomplish this goal, they host a series of Community Connection Meetings across the nation. These meetings are the first step in creating a national information-sharing network composed of local community task forces devoted to eliminating the barriers to employment for disabled individuals.The also host a series of business breakfast meetings as a follow-up to the Community Connection Meetings. That include business leaders, managers, resource professionals, and inspirational speakers. The goal of the Business to Business Meetings is to encourage prospective employers to hire disabled job seekers by demonstrating the many benefits of hiring disabled employees and by answering questions that businesses may have about issues such as personnel policies, taxes and insurance. Learn more here.
Career One-Stop: Key to Career Success connects veterans and transitioning service members with high quality career planning, training, and job search resources available at local One-Stop Career Centers. Feds Hire Vets is a website of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management designed to educate Veterans on the Federal Government's efforts to recruit and employ Veterans. This website provides information concerning the Veterans Hiring Preference, Special Hiring Authorities for Veterans, How Federal Jobs are Filled, assistance available for Veteran Education and Training. Hire Veterans: Job Opportunities for Disabled American Veterans is an online job database that posts jobs from employers that have an expressed interest in hiring disabled veterans. Military Spouse J.D. Network (MSJDN) supports military spouses in the legal profession by advocating for licensing accommodations for military spouse attorneys; educating the public about the challenges faced by career-minded military spouses and their families; encouraging the hiring of military spouses; and providing a network connecting military spouse attorneys with each other and their supporters. Helmets to Hardhats is a national, nonprofit program that connects National Guard, Reserve, retired and transitioning active-duty military service members with skilled training and quality career opportunities in the construction industry. The program is designed to help military service members successfully transition back into civilian life by offering them the means to secure a quality career in the construction industry. How to Get Tax Credits for Hiring Veterans*In addition to the skills and talents military veterans can bring to a company, did you know that they can also help your business earn tax credits?

    Businesses that hire eligible unemployed veterans can take advantage of a Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC). (This credit is also available to certain tax-exempt organizations.) After recent changes, The Returning Heroes Tax Credit now provides incentives of up to $5,600 for hiring unemployed veterans, and the Wounded Warriors Tax Credit doubles the existing Work Opportunity Tax Credit for long-term unemployed veterans with service-connected disabilities, to up to $9,600.Here's the various veteran-related tax credits your company could qualify for:

    Unemployment Tax Credit

    • Qualified Long-term Unemployment: This is a credit for new hires that begin work on or after January 1, 2016 through December 31, 2019, during which the individual is employed no less than 27 consecutive weeks, and includes a period in which the individual was receiving unemployment compensation under State or Federal law. For WOTC-certified new hires working at least 120 hours, employers can claim 25% of the first year wages paid up to $6,000, for a maximum income tax credit of up to $1,500. For WOTC-certified new hires working 400 hours or more, employers can claim 40% of the first year wages up to $6,000, for a maximum income tax credit of up to $2,400.
    • Short-term Unemployment: A credit of 40% of the first $6,000 of wages (up to $2,400) for employers who hire veterans who have been in receipt of unemployment compensation for at least 4 weeks.
    • Long-term Unemployment: A credit of 40% of the first $14,000 of wages (up to $5,600) for employers who hire veterans who have been in receipt of unemployment compensation for longer than 6 months.

    Wounded Warrior Tax Credits

    • Veterans with Services-Connected Disabilities: Maintains the existing Work Opportunity Tax Credit for veterans with service-connected disabilities hired within one year of being discharged from the military. The credit is 40% of the first $12,000 of wages (up to $4,800).
    • Long-Term Unemployed Veterans with Services-Connected Disabilities: A new credit of 40% of the first $24,000 of wages (up to $9,600) for firms that hire veterans with service-connected disabilities who have been in receipt of unemployment compensation for longer than 6 months. The credit can be as high as $9,600 per veteran for for-profit employers or up to $6,240 for tax-exempt organizations.
    • Certain tax-exempt organizations can take advantage of WOTC by hiring eligible veterans and receiving a credit against the employer's share of Social Security taxes.
