ORIGIN STORY: A TWO-YEAR JOURNEY OF GRATITUDE

The vision began with Makissa Lewis, a veteran and founder of My Seester, during her appearance on AMOR Umbrella’s podcast, Founder Time (Episode #16). She proposed sending AMOR Umbrella’s signature heart-shaped umbrella to the White House to represent Florida’s women veteran community—the third largest in the nation.

Listen to Founder Time Episode #16: “My Seester – A Conversation with Makissa Lewis and Niurka”

Inspired by the suggestion, AMOR Umbrella’s founder, Niurka Castaneda—a fellow veteran herself—spearheaded the project and launched what grew into a national tribute movement. Driven by her quest to represent America’s more than two million women veterans, Niurka collaborated with numerous organizations, leaders, veterans, and artists. Across the initiative, the team gathered signatures from women veterans from across the entire country.

Above all, this was not a political movement, but a unified group effort to honor and represent a veteran community that comes in all shapes and formations, spanning both sides of the political arena and standing united by shared service.

The Vice President Thanksgiving Gift Initiative

This phase centered on collecting signatures from women veterans across Florida and nationwide to create a unified symbol of gratitude on behalf of the nation’s female service members. AMOR Umbrella prioritized engaging veterans across all service branches, including the Reserve and National Guard, to reflect the full diversity of the military community. To ensure all operations and regulatory aspects of the initiative were handled properly, Army veteran and attorney Andy Nelson collaborated with the team to navigate the legalities of these national outreach efforts.

To gather signatures, Niurka Castaneda collaborated with local leaders and community organizations across multiple events:

Vizcaya Museum & Gardens Retreat: Organized by Masha Andreoni and Niurka Castaneda, this Miami retreat offered women veterans a tranquil environment to relax and connect.

Therapeutic Everglades Expeditions & Media Coverage: Partnering with Fishing with America’s Finest and Empowered Veterans of America, the team organized therapeutic afternoon retreats in the breathtaking Everglades, offering veterans a unique opportunity to enjoy fishing, camaraderie, and the healing power of nature. As part of these fishing trips, an episode was filmed for the Umbrellas of Hope TV miniseries. Aligned with AMOR Umbrella’s mission of giving and restoring hope one story at a time, the episode empowered and highlighted our military community while spotlighting the dedicated organizations that support our veterans.

Army Unit Gatherings: Jeanette Chandler organized and facilitated two separate meetings with active Army units to collect essential signatures required for the initial gift.

Artisanal Presentation & Collaborations

Creative collaborator Nefertiti San Miguel worked alongside Niurka Castaneda to style the initiative. San Miguel also curated and designed the traditional Furoshiki presentation. The package was wrapped in a handcrafted purple and gold Furoshiki art installation—where purple symbolized military valor and the Purple Heart, and gold represented excellence and historic achievements. Adorned with a golden furoshiki flower top with a felt red heart imported from Italy, the presentation contained an array of custom artistic details:

The Red Heart Umbrella with Collective Signatures: Honoring female veterans' strength, health, and service, personal inscriptions from women across military branches and across the country form an enduring testament to unity on the Red Heart Umbrella.

Handmade Black Leather Traveling Case: Designed by Niurka Castaneda and Nefertiti San Miguel and crafted by veteran Donald Dodson (Dodson Designs), this Signature AMOR Travel Carrying Bag was included as a functional part of the gift to carry, protect, and shield the signed umbrella. For this initiative, it was customized in sleek black leather with the AMOR Umbrella double-hearts outline in red.

Two-Colored Tenugui Cloth: A two-colored Tenugui Cloth (purple and gold) representing the Purple Heart Award, designed by Nefertiti San Miguel & Etnia Fusion + Friends.

Custom Wooden Military Tags: A set of custom wooden military tags handcrafted from natural basswood by veteran Frank Manteau (Kamikaze Wood Werks). Paying homage to classic identification tags dating back to the Civil War, they symbolize perpetual memory, strength, and veteran craftsmanship. Two distinct sets were created:

One set was tinted in red, featuring the AMOR Umbrella logo and the tagline "Giving and restoring hope 1 story at a time."

The second set was finished in natural brown, featuring the Etnia Fusion logo on one side and the inscription "Creating new paths to calm and peace with ancient wisdom" on the reverse.

Two-Part Origami Scrapbook: A two-part Origami Scrapbook designed by Nefertiti San Miguel and Danigami, featuring a handcrafted origami card.

Photo-Journal: A photo-journal by Niurka Castaneda documenting the entire creation process and featuring photos of event participants.

Original Drawing: An original drawing by Vincent Liu.

Assembly & Sewing Collaboration: Multimedia artist Nancy Griffin collaborated directly with Nefertiti San Miguel in sewing and assembling the final Furoshiki art presentation.

The completed piece—a signature Red Heart Umbrella bearing signatures from across the country—was presented as a Historical Thanksgiving Gift sent to the White House for Vice President Kamala Harris to honor and congratulate her on becoming the first female Vice President of the United States, on behalf of over two million veteran women across the country. Symbolizing unity between civilian allies, minority-owned enterprises, and veteran-owned small businesses, the gift was mailed over Thanksgiving from a historic Boston post office situated just steps away from the original Boston Tea Party site.

MILITARY SIGNIFICANCE & SYMBOLISM OF INCLUDED ARTIFACTS

Each element of the presentation was selected or created to contribute to the story, symbolism, and craftsmanship of the initiative.

The Red Heart Umbrella: Serves as the central artifact of the initiative, carrying personal inscriptions from women veterans across military branches and across the country. The heart-shaped design represents AMOR Umbrella’s identity, while the collective signatures transform the umbrella into a shared expression of gratitude, connection, and unity among women who served.

Purple-and-Gold Furoshiki Presentation: Combines traditional Japanese textile artistry with military symbolism. Purple represents military valor and the Purple Heart, while gold represents excellence and historic achievements. The handcrafted presentation reflects the care, artistry, and cultural collaboration invested in the gift.

AMOR Black Leather Travel Carrier™: Designed by Niurka Castaneda and Nefertiti San Miguel and crafted by veteran Donald Dodson of Dodson Designs, the case was created to carry, protect, and shield the signed umbrella. Its black leather construction and red AMOR double-heart outline connect practical function with the initiative’s visual identity.

Custom Wooden Military Tags: Handcrafted from natural basswood by veteran Frank Manteau of Kamikaze Wood Werks, the tags pay homage to the longstanding tradition of military identification tags and symbolize memory, strength, service, and veteran craftsmanship. The two sets preserve both the AMOR Umbrella and Etnia Fusion identities.

• Two-Colored Tenugui Cloth: The purple-and-gold Tenugui incorporates the Purple Heart symbolism into a traditional Japanese textile form, extending the cultural and artistic language of the overall presentation.

• Two-Part Origami Scrapbook: Designed by Nefertiti San Miguel and Danigami, the scrapbook incorporates handcrafted paper artistry into the gift, creating an intimate keepsake within the larger presentation.

• Photo-Journal: Created by Niurka Castaneda, the photo-journal documents the creation process and preserves photographs of participating veterans and contributors, providing a visual record of the journey behind the gift.

• Original Drawing: An original work by Vincent Liu adds a unique artistic contribution to the collection and reflects the participation of independent artists in the initiative.

• Collaborative Craftsmanship: The involvement of veterans, artists, designers, textile collaborators, photographers, community organizations, and civilian allies demonstrates how the physical gift was created through many individual contributions brought together as one presentation.

ORIGIN STORY: CONTINUING A TWO-YEAR JOURNEY OF GRATITUDE

Following the national impact of our initial White House presentation, AMOR Umbrella’s founder, Niurka Castaneda—a military veteran—led the project into its second year, expanding our national tribute across two distinct state and national initiatives. Across both chapters, our team gathered signatures from women veterans from across the entire country to honor America’s more than two million female service members.

Above all, this was not a political movement, but a unified group effort to honor and represent a veteran community that comes in all shapes and formations, spanning both sides of the political arena and standing united by shared service.

The Florida First Lady Memorial Day Care Package Initiative

Building on the momentum of the initial effort, Niurka led the initiative into its second year, focusing on Florida First Lady Casey DeSantis for a Memorial Day weekend care package gift. The Florida Everglades served as the overarching thematic and visual foundation for this second phase, inspiring an aesthetic of earth-toned camouflage, natural basswood, and wilderness restoration.

This phase grew directly out of early therapeutic outdoor retreats with Masha Andreoni (a licensed mental health therapist) and Captain Neal of Fishing with America’s Finest. Experiencing firsthand the profound healing impact of nature and outdoor recreation alongside fellow veterans, Niurka Castaneda authored and illustrated the book Venture into the Everglades using her original photography, co-authoring with Andreoni to detail the clinical and psychological benefits of outdoor retreats for veteran trauma recovery and reintegration.

The journey of this gift was just the beginning of our mission to honor and empower our female veterans. We will continue updating this page with additional stories and photos. AMOR Umbrella’s initiative stands as a lasting legacy, celebrating the achievements and contributions of those who serve.
